Before having my child, my nails were pretty long and in good care, but flash back to four years, when my girl was a baby, having long nails was a no..no. I restarted growing my nails back, two years ago. That’s when I realized my nails were getting dry and they would easily break off. I am a person who is lazy to do manicures by myself, not to mention you need the time do it. But it was either my long nails or short ones. So obviously the former is what I chose. You don’t have to spend a lot of time for manicures, you can do it at home with a suitable time frame at your pace. Today I am going to share eight tips to growing long and strong nails.
Ignore my nail polish application, I just realized, I forgot to clean the excess around the nails. When you have a kid, time is something of a luxury to mothers. But none the less, children are worth it π

8 Tips to consider for your nails:
- Choose a Nail Shape: The one thing that took me long to understand was, which nail shape should I go for. All these years or rather till a month ago, I opted for square nails, as I loved the flatness at the top and the sharp edges look. However one or the other nail kept chipping, that’s when I realized, why not change the shape of the nails. So I opted for a mix between almond and rounded shape. Almond nails are described as pointed curved nails exactly like an almond and rounded are where there is no point or a tip on the top surface, it’s more curved. This way chipping reduced and also the breakage that I had when my nails were square type. According to your finger shape, there are many nail shapes, choose the right one, however keep in mind don’t choose depending on your finger shape alone, consider the comfortability factor, if you can get used to doing work with the nails etc.
- Nails are not Tools: Ever broken your nail, when using it to open a can, or opening your delivered packages? I know the feeling and I have been there. Even simply while your cutting your vegetables or peeling certain fruits can lead to breakage. This happens due to the pressure applied on the nails when doing it. So never use your nails as tools. Try to break this habit and use proper tools suitable for the above mentioned things. Also don’t expose them to water for a long time, as the nails tend to get softer, due to which they can easily break. While cleaning your dishes in the sink, make sure you wear your gloves while doing it. This will help you to keep your nails away from the water and not chip off.
- Manicures: As I mentioned before, manicures are essential. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, but do it at your pace with a given time frame. Why I stress at this point is because, from time to time maintenance and nail care is an essential factor. The process of exfoliating from your hands to finger nails, generate blood circulation and reduces the chances of any fungi or any other infections. Hence promoting healthy nails.
- Use an Appropriate Nail File: An essential nail tool is your nail file. Sometimes even the extreme rough nail files can do damage like the ones that look like ice cream sticks or cardboard nail files. Try to choose good quality ones, and something that is not too rough and not too gritty. Instead aim for the glass type nail files or rather the crystal types as the surface has the right amount of roughness to them.
- Nail File Technique: Another point to consider is the way or rather the technique you use to file your nails. I was sort of the person who would file my nails like crazy such as see-sawing back and forth. The tip to bear in mind is to use small swiping motions, so that you don’t put more pressure while filing it. Like do little swipes along your nails.
- Nail Hardener: You get a lot of nail hardeners or strengtheners these days in the market. Make sure to apply it maybe as a base coat which is the best solution before applying your regular nail polish or otherwise just apply it on its own. Nail hardeners consists of nail care ingredients such as keratin that helps you in growing healthy nails.
- Cuticle oil: A must have in your nail care regimen. Cuticle oils help your nails from drying, it aids in moisturizing and conditioning the nails. Rosehip oil, olive oil or even castor oil caters in strengthening the nails and reducing nail infections. You get to buy cuticle oils online or in store as well. Otherwise you can make one at home.
- Say No to Biting: Many people out there still bite their nails purely out of stress, habit or out of boredom. Now doing so will only damage your nails and the look of them. Try to break the above habits. Say if you are tensed and can’t keep your nails always, try to direct your state of mind to something happy or hold onto a palm fitting sponge ball and keep squishing it to relax your mind. If you are bored, direct that boredom to do some activity like painting or an interesting activity which you can do. Tensions can lead to biting the nails, try to do some breathing exercises to calm yourself. Such steps can help you break away from these habits.
